And what do you do if there ain't?

Whatever your take - the attitude should be to make the most of what we've got for as long as we can make it last.

kind regards,
Ken GraylingKen Graylinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15366167605605171824noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7510401356434571028.post-6211241582483144672010-12-18T14:21:46.562+00:002010-12-18T14:21:46.562+00:00In my view, Belief is not necessarily connected to...In my view, Belief is not necessarily connected to Reality.

For some this is difficult, for an entire Nation was founded by people who insisted that Belief trumps Reality - any Belief; you can even choose whatever you like.

Transition is about reality, and how we choose and build the best one possible. That's us, people, doing the choosing and motivating and making real. Us, talking and agreeing between ourselves.

However we ignore the needs of the non-human world at our peril. It is easy to see consciousness, senses of pain, hunger, guilt, loyalty and cunning in animals. All with cat or dog or familiar creature know this.

From here it is easy to get into Spirit, and extend this to see a life-force throughout plants and the whole of nature. Something as “simple” as soil then qualifies as having Spirit, for it is alive.

But anything that involves organised religion - and I'm out of Transition!

Why? Because organised religions are aspects of Empire; never more so clear as Christianity. In my view the Roman Empire transitioned to the Holy Roman Empire and flooded the world with their single religion for economic and control reasons. Garrisoning people's minds is far, far cheaper then garrisoning many nations with troops.

For this job was invented a centralised orthodoxy - the Church. We see now the shattered and confused remnants of those old control mechanisms. It's spooky, like some SF horror movie about how people become infected then dominated by viruses - programmed mechanised thoughts gone awry over the years and no longer sane.

I would not countenance such tyranny in Transition; at best it would be a distraction; at worst it would be evil.

Yet I see Spirit all about. That, I acknowledge for its animus is all about... and I encourage connection. But, please, put Belief out with the trash.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7510401356434571028.post-76372582393838915782010-12-18T08:47:42.684+00:002010-12-18T08:47:42.684+00:00But some of us DO talk about that sort of thing!

In fact, connection with the sacred deepens, enlivens, and makes even more passionate, meaningful, and intimate our connections with other individuals and our communities. And furthermore, how can one separate the two imperative approaches of healing our trauma and being conscious stewards of the earth? They are inextricably connected. Lots of binary, either/or thinking going on here. If Transition is anything, it is a joyful struggle to include, embrace, and hold the whole.Carolyn Bakerhttp://www.carolynbaker.netnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7510401356434571028.post-50984827061452235322010-12-13T17:41:41.412+00:002010-12-13T17:41:41.412+00:00@JohnHeaser: Michael Brownlee's essay doesn...@JohnHeaser: Michael Brownlee's essay doesn't represent the broader sweep of transition in the US. It's more the work of a small group concentrating firmly on fast collapse. It's perfectly valid for them to focus on this, and it's a very different proposition from transition's proposal for a community-led/designed energy descent.

In fact, when I read some of the material coming from that group, I struggle to find how it fits in with the original ideas and intention of transition.

This is particularly the case if you look at the four scenarios that Holmgren discusses - Brownlee's work is directed towards "collapse".

In fact, one of Brownlee's colleagues, Carolyn Baker, writes about Holmgren's book, "Future Scenarios offers fascinating and fertile challenges for engaging Peak Oil and climate change and confronts us with the question that will not die: Will our journey to a post-petroleum world be a transition or a trauma?"

That group is focussing on the "trauma" scenario while Transition in the US is focussing on the "Earth-Steward" scenario.

I hope that helps. Certainly sums up my approach in more than one way. We are all products of and dependant on the earth under our feet - we just need to look after it a lot better.

I wonder whether there is a US/UK divide opening up in Transition. I've certainly seen it before in other organizations. We may speak a similar language but we don't look at things the same way.

I found this interesting -
http://esciencenews.com/articles/2010/12/09/look.what.your.reaction.someones.eye.movements.says.about.your.politicsJohn Heaserhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00173736155065440503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7510401356434571028.post-67940491296177661302010-12-13T12:18:30.557+00:002010-12-13T12:18:30.557+00:00Hi Charlotte... lovely piece, thanks for your cont...Hi Charlotte... lovely piece, thanks for your contribution to the debate...
best wishes
RobRob Hopkinshttp://www.transitionculture.orgnoreply@blogger.com
